Details: This week, Don Swanson with the U.S. Geological Survey will present “The Double-Barreled 2018 Eruption of Kilauea Volcano.” The eruption in lower Puna, and the partial collapse of Kilauea Caldera 30 miles away together constitute the largest short-lived eruption of the volcano since the 15th century. The development and progress of the eruption constitute a case study that was well-documented by geophysical monitoring and photography. The talk will discuss what did (or does) it all mean, was this the end of what we are used to at Kilauea or a tentative step into something different?

ABSTRACT PAINTING WORKSHOP WITH DARCY GRAY

Details: This class is for those with a basic painting background who want to explore the techniques of abstract painting. Students will develop sketches into final art pieces, play with perspective and focus, work with colors, then push themselves to paint intuitively and at different scales. Sketch paper will be provided for warm-up exercises and roughing out paintings. The class will paint on 18-by-24-inch heavy watercolor paper that was gessoed. Students will be able to take home all of their work. Basic acrylics paints, pencils, brushes and other tools will be provided, but students can bring their own if they choose.
